This type of Tacrolimus medication is used on the skin to treat a skin condition called eczema (atopic dermatitis) in patients who did not respond well (or should not use) other eczema medications. Eczema is a hypersensitivity condition that causes redness, irritation, and itching of the skin. This medication works by weakening the skin's immune system, thereby reducing allergic reactions and alleviating eczema. Tacrolimus belongs to a class of drugs known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs). Also, this medication should not be used by anyone with a weakened immune system (for example, after organ transplantation). Tacrolimus ointment is a topical medication (applied to the skin) used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema). Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease in which the skin becomes inflamed, causing itching, redness, swelling, cracking, oozing, and scaly patches. The inflammation occurs due to activation of the immune system, although the exact cause of activation is unknown.
